Tile Quantity Estimator
Calculate tiles and boxes
Estimate tile quantity for backsplashes, showers, floors, walls, fireplaces, and accent areas using project size, tile size, grout spacing, waste, and cost.
How to measure for tile
- Measure the width and height of the area in feet, or enter the exact square footage if you already have it.
- Enter the tile width and height in inches from the product listing or box.
- Add grout spacing if you want the calculator to estimate the layout footprint more realistically.
- Enter the number of tiles per box if available, or leave it blank and use the square-foot estimate.
- Add waste for cuts, broken tiles, pattern layout, corners, niches, and future repairs.
Recommended tile waste
- Use 10% for most straight-lay tile projects.
- Use 15% for diagonal, herringbone, chevron, patterned, or rooms with many cuts.
- Use 20% or more for complicated shower walls, niches, stairs, or specialty tile.
Tile calculator FAQ
Should I include grout spacing?
Including grout spacing helps estimate how much area each installed tile covers. The difference is small for large tiles but can matter more for small mosaic-style layouts.
Can I subtract outlets, windows, or cabinets?
You can use the other area subtraction field for large areas not being tiled. Avoid over-subtracting small outlets or tiny cutouts because tile is still cut from full pieces.
Should I buy extra tile?
Yes. Tile dye lots and batches can vary, and discontinued tile can be hard to replace. Extra tile is useful for cuts, breakage, and future repairs.
