Flooring Material Estimator
Calculate flooring boxes
Estimate square footage, waste, boxes, total coverage, and cost for vinyl plank, laminate, hardwood, engineered flooring, carpet, and similar products.
How to measure flooring
- Measure the longest length and widest width of the room in feet.
- Multiply length by width to get the main square footage.
- Add closets, bump-outs, landings, hallways, and connecting areas that will use the same flooring.
- Use the coverage per box from the flooring product label.
- Add waste for cuts, pattern matching, damaged boards, and future repairs.
Recommended flooring waste
- Use 5% to 8% for simple square rooms with floating floors.
- Use 10% for most standard projects.
- Use 12% to 15% or more for diagonal layouts, closets, hallways, stairs, or rooms with many cuts.
Flooring calculator FAQ
Should I round up flooring boxes?
Yes. Flooring is sold by the box, so always round up to the next full box. This calculator does that automatically.
Should I buy extra flooring for repairs?
For many projects, keeping at least one extra box is helpful in case a plank is damaged later or the product is discontinued.
Does this work for tile?
This tool is best for flooring sold by box coverage, such as vinyl, laminate, hardwood, engineered wood, and carpet. Use the tile calculator for individual tile size, boxes, grout spacing, and tile-specific waste.
